Complications & Recovery
New techniques, such as lasers used by Dr. Sacks in his Phoenix, AZ office before and after the procedure, allow for faster recovery from liposuction procedures. The length of the recovery will depend on how extensive of an operation the patient undergoes. Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and progressively increasing movement in order to speed up the healing process and reduce the recovery time.
A support garment may need to be worn for several weeks after the surgery, depending upon which area(s) are selected to perform the liposuction procedure. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with surgery, which can be treated effectively with oral medication. While serious complications are rare, patients can minimize the risk for potential problems by carefully following the directions given to them by Dr. Sacks.
Some complications post-liposuction include:
Swelling occurs mostly for a few days, but the final result may take a few weeks.
Bruising is usually minor and can be aided by taking herbal remedies.
Discomfort or pain is usually moderate, and patients are, of course, given pain medication to help during this period, which lasts for a few days, with some slight discomfort and tenderness occurring for a few weeks.
Bleeding occurs mostly during the first day or two, and then decreases rapidly over a few days. The tiny incisions used to remove the fat tend to bleed after liposuction.
Infection almost never happens. Patients are placed on antibiotics starting the day before the surgery until about a week after the surgery.
Surface irregularities vary from area to area as sometimes the skin is thicker and smoother results are expected. Sometimes the skin is thinner, has been stretched out by weight gain or pregnancies, and may have some slight irregularities after liposuction. The need for other skin tightening procedures such as an abdominolasty (Tummy Tuck), for example, in the abdominal area or a neck lift in the neck area where large fat deposits may have stretched out the skin, may be necessary. All procedures would be discussed with Dr. Sacks at the time of the initial consultation and examination.
Tenderness due to inflammation (not infection) is caused by the process of liposuction and is a natural consequence of the liposuction process. Any tenderness will disappear with time and is sometimes aided by massage.
Numbness sometimes presents itself temporarily and is more prevalent in areas such as the waist and back area.
Results may vary.
