Breast Lift Mastopexy

 Breast Lift Mastopexy Scottsdale

A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, is a procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts.  As a woman ages or after breast feeding or severe weight loss, skin loses some elasticity which can cause the breasts to lose their natural shape and firmness.  This procedure is designed to lift the breasts and give them a more youthful appearance.  A breast lift (mastopexy) may also be completed in conjunction with breast enlargement surgery (augmentation).

Reasons for Considering a Breast Lift:

  • Elevate the breasts due to sagging caused by the effects of aging and gravity.
  • Firm the breasts if they have lost fullness due to pregnancy and breast-feeding.
  • Re-align your nipples/areolas if they point down or to the side.
  • To bring back natural shape after weight loss.

Surgical Technique

The breast lift surgery usually takes two to three hours. Techniques vary, but the most common procedure involves an anchor-like incision along the lower portion of the breast.  The incision goes around the area where skin will be removed, thus defining where the nipple will be relocated.  When the excess skin has been removed, the nipple and areola are moved into a higher position.  The skin surrounding the areola is brought down and together to reshape the breast. The pattern somewhat resembles an old fashioned keyhole.

Some patients, especially those with relatively small breasts and minimal sagging, may be candidates for modified procedures requiring less extensive incisions.  One such procedure is the "doughnut (or concentric) mastopexy" in which circular incisions are made around the areola and a doughnut-shaped area of skin is removed.  Recent changes in breast lift techniques include minimal incision techniques and nipple sensation reducing procedures.

Note that if the patient is having an implant inserted at the same time as the breast lift, the implant will be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue or under the muscle of the chest wall.

Recovery Process

Generally, post-operative activity will require plenty rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time.  A supportive sports bra is applied immediately after surgery to help the healing process and to minimize movement of the breasts.   The patient will need to wear the specialized sports bra for several weeks.  Patients  report minimal to moderate pain associated with surgery which can be treated with oral pain medication.  While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions given by Dr. Sacks and his caring staff.

Complications of Breast lift

  • Swelling  is temporary and is alleviated by frequent use of ice packs
  • Bruising  is seen at times, is temporary and is also helped by the use of ice packs
  • Pain  is usually mild to moderate and assisted by Pain Medications prescribed by Dr. Sacks. This should diminish after a few days
  • Numbness may occur in the nipple/areola area or the skin of the breast and is usually temporary but may take months to fully recover
  • Infection is rare as the patient is started on antibiotics prior to surgery and continued after the surgery
  • Asymmetry may be slight after surgey but every effort is made to keep the breasts as alike as possible
  • Scars can be prominent in some patients and is related to their individual healing characteristics and skin pigmentation. Over time all scars improve but sometimes injections into the scar or revision may be needed
  • Sagging can re-occur after years causing some loss of fullness in the upper part of the breast although the position of the nipple does not change much. This slight looseness in the bottom portion of the breast can easily be corrected with a much simpler 2nd operation but can be offset and delayed by using a breast implant at the time of the initial breast lift (mastopexy)

Prices of Breast Lift (Mastopexy) will vary within a range because of some variables such as whether an implant will be needed or not and if that implant is silicone or saline. The cost of breast lift (Mastopexy) will also vary with the type of anesthesia chosen.

Range of price for Breast lift (Mastopexy):     $4750-8500 as of March 2013 Please note the final cost can only be determined after examination and discussion with the patient
